Prime Minister Mark Carney says he will personally join efforts to resolve the ongoing trade dispute with China over steep tariffs placed on Canadian canola seed exports.

Speaking in Toronto on Wednesday, Carney stated that he, along with Canada’s international trade and foreign affairs ministers, will be actively involved in seeking a resolution to the escalating conflict.

“We’re going to work hard to get that right,” Carney said. “The minister of international trade has been engaged, our foreign minister is engaged, and I will be engaged to work to find a solution for our agricultural relationship.”
The tensions intensified last month when China imposed preliminary anti-dumping duties of 75.8% on Canadian canola seed imports — a move that significantly escalates the year-long trade dispute. China is Canada’s largest market for canola seed.
Canada exported nearly C$5 billion worth of canola products to China in 2024, with seeds making up about 80% of that total. If the tariffs remain in effect, experts warn that Chinese imports of Canadian canola seed could effectively grind to a halt.
