A new Ipsos poll reveals that Canadian sentiment toward the United States has worsened amid President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade conflict, with a growing number of Canadians steering clear of American goods and travel. The survey, conducted exclusively for Global News and released just ahead of Canada Day, shows a significant shift in public behavior and attitudes since February.

According to the findings, nearly three in four Canadians now say they plan to avoid traveling to the U.S.—a 10-point increase over the past four months. Additionally, 72% report that they are deliberately avoiding purchasing American-made products, up five points from earlier this year.
When asked whether their opinion of the U.S. has diminished due to Trump’s economic and political actions targeting Canada, 77% agreed, with nearly half expressing strong disapproval. This marks a nine-point rise, highlighting deepening resentment.

“Canadians remain frustrated with President Trump and the current U.S. administration. The anger isn’t going away,” said Kyle Braid, senior vice president at Ipsos Public Affairs.
At the same time, national pride in Canada appears to be rebounding after years of decline. More Canadians say they plan to take part in Canada Day celebrations this year, reflecting a renewed patriotic spirit.
This stands in stark contrast to recent Gallup polling in the U.S., which shows American national pride dropping to historic lows ahead of the Fourth of July weekend.
Recent data supports the Ipsos findings. Statistics Canada has reported a significant decrease in Canadians returning from trips to the U.S., with double-digit declines recorded in the first five months of Trump’s second term. The drop in travel was even sharper in May, the most recent month with available figures.
Meanwhile, a separate PwC Canada report released last week found that 75% of Canadian consumers are willing to pay extra for premium or locally sourced food products. However, many remain concerned about the affordability of those higher-cost options.
